Merry Olde England - Day 3 - Walley World!

Walley World

by Andrew

It was a slow, rainy morning for us and we hung out at home. We had spent the previous evening reviewing different options for the day and were going to head to Oxford, but we changed our minds at the last minute and decided to go to Highclere Castle, better known as Downton Abbey from the show. Months ago we tried to get tickets but they were sold out for the summer, but the website suggested that if we arrive after 2, that would be our best chance to get same-day tickets. With the added benefit of the rain, we decided this was our day.

Highclere Castle was one of the highlights of our trip to the Cotswolds. Even if we couldn't get in, just seeing it and walking the gardens would be spectacular. We jumped into our trusty Vauxhall Corsa and drove through the rain for an hour and a half on A roads and the M5. As we approached, we felt pretty good about our chances of getting in. There was no traffic and there was a light rain.

A half a mile after the roundabout and we turned into the castle grounds. There we saw the moose.

In our case it was a sign saying the castle is closed on Fridays and Saturdays.

So this was as close as we got:

Amazingly, the kids were totally cool with our Walley World adventure. Particularly after we stopped at the local gas station and picked up Lion bars to console ourselves.

Not what the Dowager Countess would have done, but it worked for us.

On to other adventures!
