After a tough day of hiking on Thursday and an emotionally draining visit to Wally World on Friday, we had a slower morning on Saturday. The weather reports had predicted this to be the worst day of the week with thunderstorms and winds exceeding 45 mph. We planned for indoor activities. Of course, it was bright and sunny when we woke.
We decided to head to the Corinium Museum in the little town of Cirencester which had been recommended to us by the Cheltenham tourist office. 30 minutes later, after dodging more oncoming vehicles on 1 lane roads, we arrived and found the cutest little downtown walking area full of shops. Amazingly we found an awesome free parking spot. One thing that’s fun about parking here in England is that you can face either direction. If you see a spot on the other side of the street, just drive over there and take it, no need to turn around.
Next stop, lunch. We walked around the corner and found a little cafe where we the kids shared a jacket potato and Lija and I each had quiche and salad. The real star of the cafe was all the desserts and we planned to stop back later for tea.
Next door was a kids’ bookshop and they had won best kids bookshop in England in 2013. Very cute. They had a cute little book in the window called The Very Hungover Caterpillar. It was pretty funny. Have a read if you ever come across it.
We spent a few hours at the Corinium Museum learning about Roman life and history in the area. Pretty interesting. Given where we’re going, this is just the beginning for us. Arija and I played a early version of backgammon called tabula. In some ways it was better than backgammon.
Right back to the cafe for tea where we all shared a large slice of chocolate cake and a scone, then, after a little window shopping and Pokemoning, we got back into the car and back to our place.
We had lambchops for dinner with roasted potatoes, sauteed mushrooms, sauteed greenbeans and, of course, real British mint sauce.
